Long Haul - Day 40 (9/25/21) Richmond Hill GA - Brunswick, GA 73.0 miles.
As dramatic as yesterday was, today was quite uneventful. As I was pumping up the bike tires this morning, I discovered that Dana’s front tire was flat. I took the wheel off the bike and started removing the tire and discovered that there was a staple that had penetrated through her tire and had just slightly punctured the tube. I mean this was a rusty heavy duty staple that might have come from an office stapler. I have no idea how it could actually penetrate the wheel but she must have hit it just right.
I was dreading todays route as most of it was along US 17 and we had seen some pretty heavy traffic on previous sections. We headed out of town on 4 lanes and before too long it seemed that traffic began to thin out as we passed major connectors to other highways, and mostly I-95
. After about 10 miles it turned into a two lane and from there on we joked that it seemed like a bike path that allowed cars. The scenery was basic except for certain areas where the trees actually draped completely over the road. There was Spanish moss hanging from the trees and it looked quite magical. Other than that we just kept the wheels spinning and arrived at around 2 and are just trying to give our legs some rest.
We passed what was dubbed as America‘s smallest church. I am not sure there aren’t other churches that small, but I’ll take their word for it.
Tomorrow we leave GA and will enter Florida. All of a sudden it seems like we can see the end of this trip. It didn’t seem all that long ago when we couldn't look at the final destination but now it is coming up pretty fast.
