Long Haul - Day 4 (8/20/21)
Belfast to Edgecomb (50 miles) We also passed 200 total miles.
We woke this morning expecting rain. We tried to sleep in but 6:00 seemed to be all we can muster. The weather was super cloudy and a bit foggy early on but by 7:30 it seemed to be more cloudy than foggy so we loaded up, lit up, and headed out. It wasn't all that warm when we started but it was so humid it felt all sticky. Our lodging wasn’t near a restaurant so we dined on a granola bar and sipped on less than exciting coffee. After about an hour of riding we saw this little restaurant/convenient store so we stopped and grabbed several breakfast sandwiches and met this super interesting long distance bike touring guy. He was probably our age and I think we could have talked for quite a while but in just the few minutes we had, we discovered he rode from Madrid, Spain to Shanghai (9400+ miles) then flew to Berkeley California and rode home to Maine. All of a sudden our trek seemed a bit insignificant, although for us it is a still a stretch. In spite of his accomplishments, he was not bragging about what he had done and was very encouraging of us. Cool dude. We left that and had another 20 miles of those pesky hills. By 11:00 the sun came out and the temp kept climbing. The last 15-20 miles were pretty tough because it was just getting so hot. So we rode 5-7 miles, stopped in some shade, drank all we could and plowed on. It’s amazing how much liquid you can drink while sitting under a tree, after riding/climbing hills in 88 degree and direct sun. We ended the day where we planned so it was a good day. Oh and we say a bear. #treesforgoshen
