Long Haul - Day 38 (9/23/21) Mt. Pleasant, SC to Yemassee, SC 72.6 miles.
We are back on the move. It felt good to get moving again after three days of sitting around and killing time. The rest was good but it got a bit too long.
We started the day by crossing the Cooper River on a beautiful bridge with a really nice separated bike/walk/run path. As you will notice on the elevation, it was a pretty steep climb but it was beautiful and quite windy by the time we crested. We then wove our way through Charleston and finally found ourselves on a path that took us past an elementary school. It was really cool to see parents walking and sometimes biking their child/ren to school on the path. It certainly was a peaceful and welcomed path. Then we were routed onto US 17. It was a 4 lane highway and there was almost always room for vehicles to move over but a few got closer than I appreciated. Most of those times they were just trying to send us a message. I get it when there is no other place for them to go, but when the left lane is empty, just don’t be a jerk. We were also routed on to some country roads that were nice. We went past some old plantations and again my mind wandered to the context of several hundred years ago.
Our day felt a bit chopped up but all in all it was a good day and we made decent progress.
